The Mary Celeste was a brigantine built in Nova Scotia, Canada, and launched in 1861 under the name “Amazon.” However, it gained notoriety after its name change and an inexplicable event during its final voyage. In November 1872, the Mary Celeste set sail from New York City bound for Genoa, Italy, under the command of Captain Benjamin Briggs.
